Sky diving in Queenstown, New Zealand

This is a quote from the little pamphlet that was given to me when I entered NZone’s office for booking my first skydiving experience in Queenstown, New Zealand. Your first skydiving experience is something that will stay with you forever. Mine certainly does! And no matter how many times you dive, after that first addictive experience, whether tandem (with an experienced diver) or solo, the thrill of ‘free fall’ makes your senses come alive each time!

Free fall. Literally, falling freely through the sky. In many ways, it’s an indescribable experience. How does one put into words the multitude of emotions clamouring within the self at the same time? To me, in some sense, it’s freedom like none other. My first jump was from 15,000 feet which allowed me a free fall of approximately sixty seconds. Sitting at the edge of the Cessna, with my feet dangling out in the right position, hands on my harness, strapped to my instructor, making sure I looked straight ahead into the horizon, instead of the clouds below, before we propelled ourselves forward into the sky. And as I tumbled over into the sky, body passing through clouds (I’d always wanted to touch them), I experienced an unparalleled feeling of joy. There was nothing but the sky, the clouds, the dramatic Remarkable mountain range (as pictured in the Lord of the Rings), and the wind rushing past my body. And then, trying out spinning and various hand gestures against the force of the wind. Until the instructor deployed the chute and we made our way back to the drop zone. I was anxious that I must land in the correct sitting position but I managed to get it right!

In a way, skydiving truly did allow me to face my fear and overcome it. If you can jump off a plane at 15,000 feet, everything else seems doable after that.
